What is so special about the Thinking Cleaner compared to other wifi solutions for Roomba?
The Thinking Cleaner module has a "brain" of its own. So it is not only a way to communicate with your Roomba, but it also gives new smart features. This is possible because Thinking Cleaner has a 32 bit microcontroller and a total of 2,5Mbyte of flash memory for firmware and semi-permanent memory. Additionally the Thinking Cleaner firmware can be updated (upgraded) over the air without you having to do anything.
Some feature examples:
- 4 timer moments per weekday and you can choose between "CLEAN", "MAX", "DOCK" and "STOP" commands
- The new MAX command will do a clean cycle until the battery gets low, then it will dock. There is also a setting to start Roomba automatically a second time when the battery is fully charged. This command is especially for cleaning large rooms (up to 150m2 has been tested). The MAX mode will also solve the max distance error of the Roomba which will occur in large rooms.
- Delayed start: You can set a delayed start with a delay between 30 and 240 minutes.
- Location based start: Thinking Cleaner can start a clean cycle automatically, when you leave your house for example (works only with iPhone or Android app).
- Check bin indication: When your Thinking Cleaner has cleaned more then 90 to 120 minutes it will indicate to check the bin. The 90 to 120 minutes time depends on how often the dirt detect was triggered during cleaning.
- Multiple Thinking Cleaners are supported by the iPhone and Android app's.
- Push notifications: If you use the iPhone or Android app you can set push notifications like for example "Ready with cleaning" or "Check bin".
- Thinking Cleaner will recognise when the main brushes are not working and send a push notification.

How do i install the Thinking Cleaner?
We have full instructions available, see User manual.

Which iRobot Roomba models are compatible?
The module will fit in all models of the Roomba 500 and 600 series, See our Roomba compatibility overview. The unit is also software and hardware compatible with the 700 and 800 series. The only problem is a mechanical one. The communication (SCI) port we use is located under the handle of the 700 and 800 models. There is a diy solution to make it fit on your Roomba 700 or 800 model, see thingiverse.
If you do not have access to a 3d printer then you can order a printed cap on shapeways.com. There are two versions, one for 700 and one for 800 Roomba models.

We do not support the older Roomba models like the Roomba SE and Green (discovery series) and the original Roomba.

Home Automation compatibility?
Thinking Cleaner will be compatible with most Home Automation systems. There are several plugins available for various Home Automation systems, please go to Home Automation for a complete list.
If your system is not mentioned please let us know which Home Automation system you use. If you are able to assist us with writing special plugins, please let us know. The documentation of the API is available for download here. Please note that this API is still under development and can be changed without notice.

Possible damage because of increased height?
We have made the faceplate extension as low as possible. With the new faceplate installed it is still lower than the infrared eye on top of the bumper. The curved slope shape on our faceplate will minimise the risk of your Roomba getting stuck.

Apple compatibility
Thinking Bits is a Made for iPhone licenced (MFI) vendor, and so we will make the Thinking Cleaner fully Apple iOS and OSX compatible. We think devices should be compatible with Android and iOS mobile platforms using specific APPs and with Windows, Linux and MacOS desktop OS systems by using and standardisation on HTML 5. This is also the best way to be compatible with new future systems.

Android compatibility
For Android we also will make a free app to use with your Thinking Cleaner. We think devices should be compatible with Android and iOS mobile platforms using specific APPs and with Windows, Linux and MacOS desktop OS systems by using and standardisation on HTML 5. This is also the best way to be compatible with new future systems.

Windows 8, Blackberry and others
At the moment we do not have special apps for Windows 8 mobile, Blackberry and other systems. We think devices should be compatible with Android and iOS mobile platforms using specific APPs and with Windows, Linux and MacOS desktop OS systems by using and standardisation on HTML 5. This is also the best way to be compatible with new future systems.

Open source?
The firmware running inside the Thinking Cleaner module is not going to be open source. This is because the module has to be certified and certification includes the firmware. A json API will be available for direct communication with the Thinking Cleaner module. Everyone can build their own app or home automation plugin to control the Thinking Cleaner module. This way we are platform independent. The documentation of the API is available for download here. Please note that this API is still under development and can be changed without notice.

Thinking Sync Servers?
To make things easy for our customers we will offer a cloud based server to access your Thinking Cleaner when you are not in local wifi range. Optionally the Thinking Cleaner module can be redirected to another server, we will supply an API for this so multiple vendors or individuals can setup their own server. Of course this is not the only way to access the Thinking Cleaner, power users can also can use port forwarding.

How are notifications sent?
Notifications will be sent by email or as push message from our Thinking Sync server. It will be possible to send emails from your own server, however notifications to the Thinking Cleaner app are only possible from Thinking Sync servers. Notifications only work in combination with the Android and iOS apps.
